The Ras Bufontas Walkway is a public realm and infrastructure development spanning approximately 90,000 sqm in Al Wakra, Qatar, that was designed to enhance connectivity, accessibility, and the quality of the waterfront environment.
The Walkway features a continuous pedestrian and cycling corridor incorporating terraced embankments, beach access routes, open public spaces, and landscaped areas, creating a cohesive recreational destination while strengthening the site’s relationship with the surrounding urban environment. The beach landscape is preserved in its natural state, with the walkway conceived as a 20-meter-wide elevated ribbon that floats above the shoreline, maintaining uninterrupted views of the seascape while avoiding direct impact on the natural coastal terrain.
A continuous lowered edge replaces conventional barriers, preserving open sightlines to the horizon, while periodic spatial expansions along the promenade create sculpted balconies that project outward. Parallel staircases punctuate the length of the walkway, providing access to beach level. To extend the space’s usability year-long, outdoor cooling systems were incorporated into the design to enhance thermal comfort.
Supporting infrastructure includes site-wide utility networks, stormwater management systems, potable and irrigation water infrastructure, fire-fighting systems, and associated civil works required to support the development. The project also includes intelligent electrical and communications infrastructure, including smart urban systems, lighting, public address systems, and monitoring and control networks.
Civil and structural interventions included the design of beach embankments, site access arrangements, utility corridors, parking facilities, and associated infrastructure tie-ins, ensuring seamless integration with the wider Ras Bufontas development. Through the delivery of landscape, utility, transport, and public realm infrastructure, the project establishes a functional and sustainable waterfront environment aligned with Qatar’s broader urban development objectives.
